The Iron Horse - Demons & Lovers (1996) @320Kbps

...a nice catchy album which is still on the traditional side of the Celtic landscape. It starts with a powerful instrumental set, three great tunes delivered by the wonderful fiddling of Gavin Marwick and the ever-improving piping of Annie Grace. The wailing 2-minute introduction gives you time to sit down, pour a dram, relax, put the cat out, sit down again, relax again, and take a sip or two...."Demons & Lovers" holds the attention pretty well: plenty of great tunes from the pens of various band members, and some well-turned arrangements of traditional songs.

The Iron Horse - Five Hands High (1994) @320Kbps

The press release for this album claims it is "certain to consolidate The Iron Horse's position at the forefront of the Scottish roots scene", and I think they might be right. "Five Hands High" is definitely a step forward from the previous two Iron Horse releases: the band has matured, the line-up is unchanged from the last album, and this is altogether a more professional piece of work.

This album gives a very good idea of what The Iron Horse is like, whether on stage, on disc or in a pub: lots of driving instrumental sets, plenty of virtuoso strings, good harmonies and a balanced mix of new and traditional material. If you're looking for slow, haunting pieces, forget it - this band rarely slows the pace to less than a brisk trot. However, there are several fast haunting tracks: "A' Bhean Iadaich", "The Heiress" and "Northern Cross Rising" among them.

The album is roughly evenly split between songs and instrumentals, but I was pleased that the instrumentals still took the lion's share: this is definitely where the band's greatest strengths lie, with the brilliant fiddling of Gavin Narwick and whistling of Annie Grace backed by equally accomplished strings, keyboards and percussion. Annie's piping features strongly on this album, on both highland and small pipes, and it is much improved from the last album. I felt the small pipes were a bit overdone in places, such as in "The Lowlands of Holland", but that's just my personal preference for the big pipes.

Iron Horse lost a singer and gained a drummer between the first and second albums, and the singing on the last album was, perhaps, a little shaky as a result. However, this new release has rock-solid vocals throughout, with the two female voices blending and harmonising very nicely. I did find some of the words a bit hard to make out, but the lyrics are written out in full. Contrary to my claim above, there are three slowish songs on the album, but I preferred the faster ones!

The "percussionist" has also come into his own on this album: the multitude of things being hit and shaken gives a consistent strong beat behind songs and tunes alike. The reference to the "Scottish roots scene" in the blurb is perhaps justified by the Afro-Caledonian feel of some tracks, but this is never overdone and the percussion adds welcome depth to the overall sound.

The new compositions by Rod, Lynn and Gavin give a very distinctive flavour to the album. There is plenty of new and exciting material here, and all of it played with great skill and energy. I'm already looking forward to Iron Horse's next album, whatever they decide to call it!

The Iron Horse - Thro' Water, Earth & Stone (1993) @320Kbps

For some time now, The Iron Horse has been making a name for itself on the Scottish folk scene. Because of the instrumental line-up, including Highland pipes, it is inevitable that this band will be compared to some other Scottish bands which have gone before. I believe that this album proves that The Iron Horse is fast developing its own sound.

"Thro' Water, Earth and Stone" has six instrumental and five vocal tracks. The instrumentals are a mixture of traditional and contemporary tunes, some written by members of the band, and all in traditional style. The arrangements are excellent and the playing is bright and crisp.

The singers, Annie Grace and Lynn Morrison, also play - whistles/pipes and keyboards/viola/fiddle respectively. Their singing isn't as strong as their instrumental skills, but it's pleasant and the arrangements make up for any lack of strength in the vocal department.

Overall, it's a very good album and would be welcome in anyone's collection of Scottish/Celtic music.

The Iron Horse - The Iron Horse (1992) @320Kbps

The self-titled The Iron Horse debut album from 1992 is simply superb. If one was to compile a list of the ten best Celtic releases of the last decade, this album would be among them. Described by critics as one of the "new wave" of Scottish folk groups. A powerful new wave Scottish traditional folk music, imaginatively interpreted & covering a broad spectrum, from haunting slow airs & ballads to driving instrumentals.

Calan - Bling (2009) @160Kbps

Calan bring together the remarkable talents of 5 young musicians giving a fresh and ‘cool’ sound to traditional Welsh music. With their contemporary and lively approach they breathe new life into the old traditions. Sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes and a spirited and energetic performance of Welsh step dancing. They blast their way through some of the old favourite reels, jigs and hornpipes with fast paced and uplifting arrangements before melting into some of the most beautiful and haunting songs.

Four of the members met up in Sweden in 2005 while taking part in Trac’s Wales-Sweden exchange programme, visiting the Ethno summer school. They are all in their teens and early twenties, and come from different parts of Wales – the Lleyn Peninsula, Swansea, Bryn Mawr, Newport and Bangor.

Patrick Rimes - Fiddle, pipes and whistle – twice junior Celtic fiddle champion he is a multi instrumentalist who’s been called the rising fiddle star in Wales

Bethan Williams-Jones - accordion, piano, vocals and champion step dancer. Nominated in 2007 for the coveted Bryn Terfel Scholarship

Llinos Eleri Jones - learned her craft from the traditional players in Wales giving Calan that magical ingredient - the sound of the Welsh harp

Angharad Sian Jenkins – is not only folk player. Her talents are also being sought out by rock bands and singer songwriters. She recently toured Ireland, Holland and Brittany

Chris Evans (Chris ab Alun) - brings a mixture of traditional rhythms and a hint swing guitar to give the over all sound and racy feel.

Aidan O'Rourke - Sirius (2006) @320Kbps

About the musician:

One of the UK’s most expressive and dynamic musicians, Aidan O'Rourke is a fiddle player and composer from Oban on the West Coast of Scotland. He is a member of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning trio, Lau and supergroup Blazin’ Fiddles and was recently voted ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ at the Scots Traditional Music Awards.

A composer of flair and imagination, Aidan O'Rourke’s melodies have been recorded by many established artists and he has been commissioned by numerous arts organisations including the Dundee Rep Theatre, Folkworks in Tyneside and Tolbooth in Stirling, where he is the current musician-in-residence. Last year he made vital compositional and performing contributions to two new creative collectives. The first is Parallelogram, a genre-defying, beautifully anomalous nucleus of creative sound, which also features his Lau band mates Martin Green and Kris Drever in addition to Pete Wareham (Acoustic Ladyland) and Flook's Brian Finnegan (whistles/flute), John Blease (Drums) and Oli Hayhurst (Bass). The second is Cascade, a project that features Aidan alongside Andy Sheppard (saxophones), Sheema Mukherjee (sitar), Simon Thoumire (concertina) and Kuljit Bhamra (tabla/percussion) - musicians with international reputations for cross-genre and improvisatory work. Both of these collectives premiered at the South Bank Centre in London in the autumn of 2006 and were performed throughout 2007.

Other recent commissions include: Encore – a project involving some of the UK’s finest young musicians which toured extensively as the opening act for Blazin’ Fiddles and has been recorded for CD; Mantra Alba which featured the children of Dunfermline and welcomed the Dalai Lama to Scotland in 2004 and Sirius a work for 13-piece band that was commissioned by Celtic Connections New Voices series. Aidan’s musical style and expression is evident in this vast work which incorporates a wide variety of musical styles from ultra-traditional folk to jazz, roots and groove. The band featured some of Europe's top jazz and traditional musicians including Harald Haugaard, Charlie McKerron, Brian Finnegan, Colin Steele, Luke Daniels and Phil Bancroft and has not only been released on CD, but was chosen for performance by the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music (Odense, Denmark) as an example of how different musical genres can work together.

Aidan is much sought after as a teacher and session musician and has performed on over 80 albums, ranging from Runrig to Karine Polwart and Karen Mathieson. Always one who is keen to diversify, he has been a featured soloist in Donald Shaw’s spectacular “Harvest” concert and he also made his acting debut as a helmsman from Barra in the Highland Festivals theatre production The Seven Hunters.

In addition to his ongoing work with Lau and Blazin’ Fiddles, Aidan is also a member of the Colin Steele's Stramash and appears occasionally with Karine Polwart and Scotland's unofficial folk orchestra, The Unusual Suspects.

About the album:

This music was originally commissioned by Celtic Connections Festival in 2003 as part of the New Voices series. A lovely full-sounding album of great themes and gorgeous playing.

Aidan writes.." Burning the brightest star in the sky, Sirius has been used for centuries as a key navigational tool for travellers. As a travelling musician it is often difficult to appreciate what you are experiencing on the road. The people I meet and the places I visit often merge together as a tour progresses. In writing this music I took the time to reflect on my experiences and to appreciate the people, the places and the many adventures. I've been travelling and touring since I was 15, which is half my life. In the midst of these journeys , one thing has remained constant: Sirius. To me, Sirius represents home.

The Border Collies - Unleashed! (2004) 320Kbps

The Collies comprise of six members, four hailing from Co. Sligo, one from Luton, England and one from North Mayo. As individual artists the members have already established themselves as very talented musicians throughout the country and abroad but combined together as a team they definitely have plenty of Bark and Bite.

The very talented Colm O'Donnell (nicknamed Shep) is the founder of the Band. Colm has not only established himself as being one of the finest traditional singers today, but has many all Ireland credits to his name on concert flute, tin whistles, as well as singing. He has toured with Comhaltas many times, and Music Network and has taught Traditional music and song all over Ireland and abroad.

Tubbercurry man Declan Payne (Fido) plays the Piano Accordion with the group. Declan is highly regarded as an excellent player and teacher of the instrument. He has toured with Gurteen group Ceoltoiri Coleman and Music Network. Declan is holder of a Senior All Ireland title on the Piano Accordion.

Playing Banjo and Mandolin on the group is Declan's wife, Theresa O'Grady. Theresa (Tess) is a well renowned figure on the traditional circuit in Ireland and her native Luton , and is regarded as one of the finest Banjo players in the country. She has traveled the world, playing, and teaching the Banjo, and has toured with Comhaltas many times. Theresa is a holder of Senior Banjo, duet, and trio All Ireland titles.

Shane McGowan (Bruce) is one of the accompanists with the group. He hails from Knocknashee in South Sligo . He is the son of the great flute player Harry McGowan. Shane is an exceptional guitarist, and plays many different styles of music. He is one of the dominant figures on the Dublin scene, playing regularly in venues throughout the city but also finds time to teach at many workshops. Shane has been featured accompanying many great artists on the television programmes, namely “The Late Late Show” and “Open House” .

Mayo woman Maria Lynn (Sal) plays Piano and Bouzouki with the group. She has taught the Piano at many musical festivals both in Ireland and abroad. She is a member of Ceoltoiri Coleman throughout the summer months, and tours abroad regularly with her ceili band, “The Heather Breeze Ceili Band”. Maria is a much sought after accompanist and teacher.

To complete the group we have on Bodhrán and vocals Siobhán O'Donnell. Siobhán (Sheeba) is the eldest daughter of Colm and is the youngest member of the group. Siobhán's fine Bodhrán playing adds to the pulsating rhythms, made by the group. She has toured North America and Europe with many groups, and is also a holder of All-Ireland titles.

Luke Plumb - A Splendid Notion (2009) @320Kbps

Luke Plumb is a multi-instrumentalist with a varied and eclectic musical outlook. Luke from Hobart Tasmania, is a member of Scottish super group Shooglenifty, who enrolled him to tour Australia with them in 2002. After the success of the tour he joined the band and currently lives in Edinburgh.

The long awaited solo album from Shooglenifty band member Luke Plumb. Simply mandolin with a bit of percussion. Delightful. The mandolin has become increasingly popular in Scottish music and with Luke Plumb, a noted exponent, we have an excellent CD of mostly traditional tunes with percussion accompaniment from James Mackintosh.
